THREE NEW DIAMOND SHARPENING PRODUCTS FROM TREND

Trend Routing Technology has introduced three unique and innovative diamond sharpening products to the North American marketplace.

There are two 3” diamond tapered files and a double sided Machinist flat file, which along with the popular existing 6” file completes the most comprehensive range and choice to the end user.

Standard Diamond Three Inch Tapered File (Trend Item #DWS/TF3/F)
1a.jpg 1b.jpg Following the feedback received from the Wood Turning fraternity and woodworkers in general, James Barry (designer of the Trend diamond sharpening range) has designed a new 3” inch diamond taper file. This standard Trend file has features that include: a redesigned smaller handle, 3 inch 400 grit (40 micron), medium cut, monocrystalline diamond with flat top and convex back and continuous diamond surface.

“The new redesigned standard three inch taper file is suitable for all wood turning tools, flutes, skews, ring tools, gouges etc. and sharpens carbide tipped tooling in seconds. Its unique size allows access to hard to get at places and as with all of the Trend diamond files, optimum results are achieved when the files are utilized with very little pressure, “I recommend using little more pressure then the weight of the file itself!” stated Barry.

The DWS/TF3/F standard taper file has a price of $ 43.55.

Diamond 3 Inch Mini Tapered File  (Trend Item #DWS/TF3/MF)
2a.jpg 2b.jpg “We also have introduced another new 3” diamond taper file to complete the most comprehensive tapered file range a vailable to the woodworker.  Barry stated, “woodworkers, especially carvers, told us that they would also like a smaller version of the popular 6” tapered file and they would also prefer a smaller redesigned handle.  Further, they requested a smaller and thinner cutting surface than the other new 3” file so that access to smaller areas can be achieved.

The result from their feedback is the Trend Mini Tapered File. ” Features of this file include: three inch blade with flat top and convex back, fine 600 grit (25 micron) electroplated monocrystalline diamond and continuous diamond surface". Barry stressed, “this new mini 3” diamond taper file is ideal for carvers and turners that need to get into small areas such as small flutes in carving tools and shaped tooling.  Also, it is also ideal for woodworkers that need to sharpen carbide tipped tooling and it is especially useful for sharpening hard to get at places such as contours on shaper cutter insert knives. Finally this file can be used to great effect on any type of rotary wood cutting blade.”

The DWS/TF3M/F mini taper file has a list price of $ 37.74.

Diamond Machinist Double Sided Flat File (Item # DWS/MF/FC)
3a.jpg 3b.jpg “I have witnessed dissatisfaction in the market place over the quality of the cheap single sided toothbrush type files. They don’t stand up to repeated use and sometimes the diamond plate comes away from the thin cheap plastic base,” observed James Barry. He continued, “ With this in mind, we have introduced the Double Sided Machinist file. It consists of two individual diamond surfaces - fine & coarse – and they are separately molded into a heavy duty ABS black plastic handle.”

“ It is ideal for sharpening turning tools, carbide inserts, metal working lathe tools, and in most applications where it is important to keep the hands away from the work surface” stated James Barry. Barry added, “The beauty of the machinist file is that it is rugged and it is versatile. It can be utilized as a file or as a slip stone and with a 600 grit (25 micron) side and a 300 grit (50 micron) side, it offers the capacity to produce fine razor sharp edges or for coarse applications such as deburring edges.

The Machinist File is an important addition to the Trend Diamond file range and I foresee it being utilized by wide range of woodworking enthusiasts and in a multitude of industrial applications.”

The # DWS/MF/FC Machinist Stone has grit size clearly marked on the handle to avoid confusion and like all Trend diamond stones and files, it has a five year guarantee.

The price on the machinist stone is $ 37.74.

TWO NEW ADDITIONS TO FORREST'S WOODWORKER II BLADES

The new 12”-diameter blades provide smooth, quiet cuts and are ideal for most table, circular, and panel saws.  They are available with either a 1” or 5/8” bore or can be customized to the customer’s specifications.

forrest-12in-48t-wwii.jpg Forrest Manufacturing has expanded its high-performance, 48-tooth Woodworker II line by adding two 12”-diameter blades.   Like the other blades in this popular series, these latest additions deliver quieter, smoother cuts with less vibration and have excellent cross-cutting capabilities.  As a result, Forrest’s 48-tooth Woodworker II series continues to be the preferred choice of a growing number of professional craftsmen and serious hobbyists.

In discussing the two 12”-diameter blades, the company’s Vice President, Jay Forrest, said, “Both of these products have a 1/8” kerf.  Customers can choose either a 1” bore or a 5/8” bore.   If they prefer a different bore, we’ll gladly customize the blade to their specification for a modest charge.”

Forrest already had two other blades in its 48-tooth Woodworker II series.  One is its standard 10”-diameter blade with a 5/8” bore and 1/8” kerf; the other is its thin kerf version with a 10”-diameter, 5/8” bore, and a 3/32” kerf.   Both the new 12”-diameter blades and these 10”-diameter blades can be used on practically all popular brands of table, circular, and panel saws.  These include such well-known names as Altendorf, Felder, Inca, Martins, Rockwell, SCM, Sears, and Striebig.
Clean, Quiet Cross-Cutting.

Forrest’s series of 48-tooth Woodworker II blades are ideal for making top-quality cross cuts.  Vice President Forrest explains, “Most blades have a difficult time making super-clean cross cuts.  That’s because you often get splintering or a fuzzy cut when running a blade perpendicular to the fibers in the wood grain.  However, our 48-tooth blades—including the new 12”-diameter blades—have 8 more teeth than our original Woodworker II series.  This results in an easier feed.  Also, the points of the teeth have a 25-degree bevel, rather than a 15-degree bevel.  Sharper points allow the blades to slice cleanly through the wood fibers as they cut across the grain.  This makes the operation quieter and produces less vibration.   So these blades are an excellent choice for those desiring a high-performance, all-purpose product.  The new 12” blades, with their wider diameters, are especially suitable for craftsmen who need to make deeper cuts on thicker stock.”

Both of the 12”-diameter Woodworker II 48-tooth blades list for $ 149.00.
The catalog number for the 1” bore is WW12487125;
the number for the 5/8” bore is WW12487125A.

FURNITURE SEMINARS AT AWFS FAIR

AWFS Fair will be offering several skill courses on handcrafted furniture, popular with the independent craftsman and the high-end hobbyist, as well as a practical course on photographing furniture.

jm.jpg  Jeff Miller of J. Miller Handcrafted Furniture in Chicago will offer two sessions. In a half-day session entitled, Designing and Building Chairs, he de-mystifies chair construction and joinery for those who may be intimidated by the challenges that chairs pose.  Miller, author of numerous books including Chairmaking and Design, has designed over 35 chairs in the last three decades and won numerous awards in museum and juried shows nationally. In Mastering Furniture Design Fundamentals, Jeff approaches design as a skill to be developed similar to other woodworking skills. He will explore each phase and process involved in design from seed idea to finished piece.

mp.jpgFine Woodworking magazine art director, Michael Pekovich will lead a session on Photographing your Furniture Like a Pro.  Having photographed over more than 35 covers for the magazine, Michael will share tips on how to take a great finished shot, including information on composition, background and lighting and how to utilize your own digital camera for the great shots.

pl.jpg  Master craftsman, Phil Lowe, founder of the Furniture Institute of Massachusetts will present sessions on Advanced Joinery and Ornamental Inlay.  In the Joinery class, Lowe demonstrates complex techniques such as slot dovetails, angled dovetails for drawer construction that isn’t square; angle tenons used in chair construction; and mortise and tenons for curved parts.  The Inlay class shows how to embellish furniture with various Federal furniture techniques such as stringing, banding, bellflowers and fans. He also shares how to make simple tools designed for inlay stringing and a process known as sand-shading.

Under the Software & Technology track, but of interest to furniture makers, is a course called, CAD/CNC for the Custom Furniture Maker. Leland Thomasett of Taghkanic Woodworking in New York will explore using CAD/CAM software to design furniture, create fixtures and cut parts. Leland studied with Wendell Castle and participated in gallery shows before starting his company in 1989.

For those at the show whose interests center around furniture, The Furniture Society (TFS) will hold its annual conference in conjunction with the 2011 AWFS Fair.  Look for the display of TFS member work in their show floor booth and for on-site activities open to attendees.

The 2011 College of Woodworking Knowledge offers seminars in eight different tracks and involves over 50 industry experts who will deliver presentations to attendees. NEW 3M PRODUCTS FOR DIY SAFETY

From basic lawn care to routine home maintenance, DIY activity has increased and has become more common, and so have project-related injuries. To help DIYers learn how to do-it-safely, 3M TEKK Protection Brand is kicking off the “Safety. For everyone.” advocacy campaign in partnership with the nonprofit Home Safety Council. 3M, along with the Home Safety Council, is committed to educating consumers and reminding DIY enthusiasts and beginners to be responsible when taking on DIY projects by generating a groundswell of advocacy for personal safety projects.

smart lens photochromic eyewear (90873).jpg As part of the campaign, 3M along with the Home Safety Council conducted the “Safety. For everyone.” Survey to gain insight into how people currently view DIY safety.* While one in five people reported suffering from injuries while doing various maintenance projects in their home, more than half (53%) of those surveyed believe their injury could have been avoided yet still didn’t purchase safety equipment even after the fact.

With simple safety precautions being ignored, serious, preventable injuries can, and are, occurring.    Despite all the variety of items available to consumers to potentially make households safer, 54 percent of DIY fanatics admit they’ve been known to neglect certain safety precautions. And even though people know that they should use safety equipment, less than half (47%) will be somewhat likely, if at all, to wear or use safety products in the future during any DIY or home maintenance projects.

professional multi-purpose respirator.jpg Some of today’s most popular home improvement projects include painting, lawn care and remodeling, including removing old insulation and installing new drywall, as well as gardening and outdoor projects. The 3M TEKK Protection Product Line showcases 3M’s continued commitment to offering a complete line of safety products with superior comfort, features and performance and investments in innovation behind future products. “With 3M TEKK Protection Products, we’re making it simple to keep you and your family safe with the right tools for the right project,” said Chris Armitage, 3M Safety & Electrical Business Manager.

DIYers who are taking on projects indoors and out can help keep their eyes protected with the 3M TEKK Protection eyewear with clear, gray or indoor/outdoor lenses, available in a variety of popular sunglass-style frames in modern colors.  3M TEKK Protection Forceflex eyewear offers patented technology in bendable, flexible frames that can withstand tough treatment and fit any face shape. Both frames meet the ANSI Z87.1-2003 standards for impact resistance from projectiles moving at up to 150 feet per second.

digital worktunes hearing protector & am-fm stereo radio (90541).jpg “In addition to superior protection, this eyewear line also offers comfort and style options that are not typically found in standard safety eyewear options on the shelf,” said Jenny Weaver, supervisor, 3M Eyewear Marketing Supervisor. “We looked at the top 10 eyewear trends currently on the market and used them as our design inspiration; these are not your grandfather’s glasses.”

3M TEKK Protection Respiratory Products include a line of NIOSH-approved respirators designed for exceptional comfort, durability and ease of use. 3M’s unique patented Cool Flow™ Valve allows for easy exhalation and heat reduction.
