Linda and I went to Las Vegas last month for the AWFS (Association of Woodworking and Furnishings Suppliers).

The AWFS is the largest show of it’s kind in North America, covering 475,875 square feet of show space, with exhibits from 910 companies (many with multiple booths), and over 30,000 attendees (from 66 countries).

Up until now, we had only been attending Canadian wood shows, but when we saw how many companies that cater to the home hobbyist were going to be in attendance, we knew that we had to attend (did I mention that it was in Vegas?). Apparently, we weren’t the only ones that felt that way, as AWFS stats show a 27% rise in their Canadian attendance.

Some of the Canadian companies that we met with were: General, JessEm, Oneway, Exaktor Tools, and Leigh Industries. Watch for future coverage on the offerings of these world-class Canadian companies.

Others companies that we spend time with included Delta/Porter-Cable, Steel City Tools, Kreg, Woodline USA, CMT, Bosch, and Freud. We will also be showing you some great new products from these companies in upcoming issues.

But for now, sit back and enjoy this months eNewsletter.

Enjoy!

Oneway Announces Unique Sit-Down Lathe

Oneway Manufacturing has successfully designed a lathe that can be used while the turner is either standing up in the traditional position, or sitting down in a comfortable chair or wheelchair. Production is slated for this summer, with lathes being available for shipment in September of 2007.

This lathe, like almost all of ONEWAY products is designed and manufactured in Stratford, Ontario. Its design was born from the requests of customers who can't turn for as long as they might like due to fatigue in their legs, bad knees, or an aching back.

Electronic speed control, a full one horsepower motor, patented clamping and rotation should make this machine a great addition for all turners.

For further information on this totally new concept, patent pending lathe, contact Cindy Clay at 1-800-565-7288.

The Hanson Superpencil Outperforms Conventional Pencils

Until now, no tool set has been complete without a carpenter pencil. But, today, the C.H. Hanson Company has introduced the next generation carpenter pencil, the SUPERPENCIL.

SUPERPENCIL is a carpenter pencil in design - the rectangular shape allows users to mark either sharp or wide lines and prohibits the pencil from rolling, even on steep inclines. Where SUPERPENCIL deviates from the norm is that 100% of its surface is a writing surface - no wood enclosure and it lasts seven times longer.

SUPERPENCIL is made entirely from non-toxic, graphite composition that marks wood, paper, concrete, and many other materials, and its lines are water and smudge resistant. The extremely durable graphite never needs sharpening, which is a tremendous time saver when making multiple marks or marking on harder materials.

Available at the Home Depot.

Julia Godfrey
As most of our readers will know, less than one month after celebrating its fifth anniversary show, Rosewood Studio Inc. declared bankruptcy on June 4, 2007.

Ron Barter, an instructor at the school since September of 2002, has purchased the name and all other assets of the business.

Ron is pleased to announce that the first class at the new Rosewood Studio will be starting August 13, 2007. He plans to have the school back into full-time operation the first week of September. Many of the faces as well as the programs and opportunities offered to students in the past will be carried forward. If you have any ideas for things you would like to see improved, now would be a great time to let Ron know.

Deposits paid to the former Rosewood Studio Inc. for courses that were scheduled from the beginning of June 2007 on will be honored at the new Rosewood Studio. For those who will not be able to attend their scheduled courses, Ron will transfer credit for those deposits to a future course offered any time in the next 6 months.

The new web site should be up and running soon, and you can contact Ron, or Mary Anne at 1-866-704-7778 or 613- 256-8900, if you have any questions.

Steel City Tool Works 18" Industrial Bandsaw (Model 50250)
You might think that the first shop machine you need to purchase is a table saw. Maybe not. A band saw is an exceptionally versatile milling machine.

With it you can rip straight stock, cut any manner of curves and circles, and resaw lumber to make your own shop veneer.

A bandsaw is also considerably safer to use - particularly for the novice woodworker.

For a home hobbyist a 14" bandsaw will likely do the trick. However, if you are planning to do some serious woodworking - building cabinetry or furniture, then an 18" bandsaw is what you want.

And the Steel City Tool Works Model 50250 might just be the best value in 18" bandsaws on the market right now. More...

Darren Boulton and his jewellery box

Darren Sutton, Surrey, BC

We received this submission and accompanying photos from Ray Boulton.

"My name is Ray Boulton - I am a Production Foreman for a small custom kitchen manufacturer in Surrey, BC, and have been an avid reader of your publication for many years now.

I have recently sponsored a young man, Darren Sutton, for our joinery apprenticeship program, which he will be starting in the spring of 2008.

Over the past few weeks he has been coming into our shop on a regular basis, designing and building a rather impressive jewelry box for his girlfriend - this project is so impressive I felt I should submit it to you on his behalf.

Darren has only been in this trade for a few months, and as I said, will not even start his first year of joinery until next spring. But he has already shown more promise than virtually any other apprentice I have trained in my 35 years in the trade.

This project was entirely designed, built, and finished by Darren, with no hands-on help at all. I had given him only minimal suggestions and guidance to gauge his abilities and problem solving skills. He did no drawings as such for this project and designed it on the fly, doing samples of each process in MDF first to prove it would indeed work.

The hinging and machining of the door assemblies with integral 90 degree stops was very impressive. The box jointed drawers surprised me since the day before doing them he had never even seen a box joint done.

Yet with a very rudimentary sketch from me he was able to build his own jig, even better than I had suggested (I have since built one for my shop following his changes). The following day I was very surprised to see not only his jig but the machined drawer parts waiting for me on his bench when I opened the shop.

I think this project is an excellent example of what a young person can do with the right determination and I hope it will inspire other potential woodworkers."
