Just a few short years ago we seemed content with 18 Volt power tools - a spare battery or two and you were ready to take on any project.

Well, the 18 Volt may soon be passé - just check out Bosch's line of 36 Volt lithium-ion power tools. Is the battery powered table saw such a far fetched idea?

We're always telling our readers to protect their lungs from sawdust. A good dust collection system, even for the small weekend shop, is an absolute must. We also suggest that they buy the best that they can afford. Quality lasts. Check out the new Gorilla Vac from Oneida. A top quality shop vac to keep your lungs and shop clean - albeit at a Lamborghini price.

We also have some nice work for you to check out - winners from the 2007 Outaouais Wood Carvers annual show, and from the 'Fresh Wood' student competition held at the 2007 AWFS Fair in Las Vegas. You'll see some impressive work in these photos. If you've something you think is worth shouting about send us photos; we'll include it in an upcoming issue of the eNewsletter.

Enjoy!

Paul

Glen Friesen, Waldheim, SK

Glen wanted this jewellery box to be radically different from the one that he made for the Dec/Jan 08 issue of the magazine ("Inlaid Jewellery Box"). He also wanted to incorporate some turned pieces, and inlay a design on a convex surface.

The jewellery box and inner tray are turned from jarrah. The outer 'wing' was turned from curly maple and then trimmed to shape on the band saw. The legs are made by alternating strips of ebony and maple. They were cut in half, matched to the curve of the wing and then dowelled together, to support the wing. The hinge is made from jarrah and curly maple with a brass pin and dowelled to the lid with turned 1/8" ebony dowels.

The interior tray has a minimalist ring holder, 1/8" saw kerfs cut into curly maple, painted black and sandwiched between strips of jarrah with a turned ebony handle. The rest of the tray is divided into four quadrants and a circular mirror is inlayed into the lid. Glen was quite satisfied with the way the inlay turned out. Inlaying the white and gold mother of pearl for the horse head on the turned surface prompted him to rethink how he installs inlay. We think it worked well.

Ken Dixon, Kanata, ON

This beautiful Shaker inspired clock is based on a photo Ken saw in a book of Shaker furniture and some subsequent research done on the internet.

The clock is 33 1/2" tall by 11 1/8" wide by 4 5/16" deep and is made of walnut, with a glass window in the upper door. The clock face, hands and mini quartz movement where purchased from Lee Valley.

Ken used rabbet and stopped dado joinery for the case, and pinned mortise and tenon joinery for the doors. He finished the clock with several hand rubbed coats of Watco, medium walnut, Danish oil.
