Lots of good changes already this year with Canadian Woodworking magazine and eNewsletter.

First off, you’ll see that we have linked this issue’s ‘Product Review’ to an index of product reviews. This collection of reviews will be updated monthly, so please let us know if there is something that you want to see covered.

As for the magazine, our February/March issue will be featuring two new project series- Making Your Own Hand Tools will have you filling your shop with ‘hand-made’ hand tools; and Workshop Jigs, will outfit you with every jig your workshop will ever need.

Our first hand tool project is a beautiful Hand Plane, and our first workshop jig is a Cross Cut Sled for your table saw. That issue is just off the press, so it should be arriving in your mailbox by the end of next week.

Thanks and enjoy

Kreg R3 Pocket Hole Kit

Professional woodworkers have long known the benefits of pocket hole joinery. The joints are quick and easy to make and are exceptionally strong. Apart form the pocket hole jig, the only tool you need is a power drill.

The unique design of the new R3 from Kreg Tools features independent positioning sliders that can be quickly adjusted (without tools) to any one of 9 position settings allowing the jig to join material from ½” up to 1½” thick and anything in between. A clamp adapter pad is designed to capture the pad of any of the optional Kreg Face Clamps to the jig. This allows a clamp to be physically attached to the jig and greatly speeds the process of drilling repetitive Pocket Holes. For added flexibility the clamp adapter can also be easily removed from the jig allowing it to be secured to a work piece with any off-the-shelf bar clamp. Another feature of the R3 is the wood chip relief holes located on the backside of the jig.

These large holes serve to allow wood chips to quickly escape the flutes of the drill bit. Getting the wood chips out of the flutes greatly eases the force required for the drilling stroke and keeps the drill bit sharp longer. Lastly, the R3 is packaged in a durable plastic carrying case. A moulded insert inside the case provides a place for every part and even has an area to hold a 100 count screw package. In addition, a depth collar setting gauge has been printed onto the case insert and a screw selection chart has been adhered to the inside lid of the case for easy reference. Available from most building supply outlets.

Bridge City HP-7 Shoulder Plane

Bridge City Tool Works has released the HP-7 Shoulder Plane. Featuring a polished stainless steel dual use rear handle, the HP-7 performs equally well upright or on either side. Recessed into the body are two adjusting wheels: one tightens the adjustable front throat and the other modifies iron depth. No additional tools are needed to adjust the mouth, iron depth or to lock the iron in place.

Ideal for flawless joint work, the ergonomic rear portion of the plane fits comfortable in one's hand and toggles upward for quick, one handed iron depth adjustments. The HP-7 retails for $589US and is a limited edition Signature Series production run, signed by the tool designer, John Economaki.

Stanley X-treme AntiVibe Hammer

The Stanley Works launches its new FatMax® Xtreme™ AntiVibe® Hammer combining its patented AntiVibe® tuning fork technology with a new grip design that reduces torque by more than 30 percent.

The new torsion control grip features 24 torque-stabilizing bars moulded into a shock-dampening core reducing the effects of torque on wrists and elbows. In addition to the added features in the grip, the new hammer design is precision balanced and incorporates a magnetic nail starter for one-handed operation and extended reach.

The hammer is available in 16 and 20 oz. nail hammers with curve or rip claws as well as 20-, 22-, 24- and 28-oz. framing hammers in either a checker or smooth face configuration, and is priced from $27.99 to $49.99. Available from most building supply outlets.

Marty Schlosser, Ottawa

Marty's design for this table incorporates a bit of Queen Ann style with a dash of Captain Nemo! When the wings are in the upright position the table top bears a striking resemblance to a manta ray.

The table is made of cherry and finished with a with a rub-on gel stain (Minwax), followed with three coats of water-borne polyurethane (Target Coatings) applied with a Fuji HVLP spray system.

We'll be featuring a dresser by Marty in an upcoming issue of the magazine.

Dan Peer, Innerkip, ON

This is a picture frame stand that Dan made for his mom this Christmas.

They had their own cherry trees quartersawn and air dried. Dan spent a lot of time "plank flipping" to get the matches he liked.

He added the walnut backs after deciding to use bifold hinges, so that the frame could stand in any position, and the back would be visible at times.

Dan Charbonneau, Kanata, ON

Dan's humorous carving of a recent fishing trip no doubt. He's demonstrating the 'all new Hawkeye II fish finder'.
