It’s only the first part of July and already the Canadian wood show promoters are busy preparing for the fall wood show season.

There is going to be a lot of changes to this years schedule, so be sure to check out our website for full details

Here is a quick review:

Nova Scotia will not be holding it’s annual wood show in Halifax this year.
However, the New Brunswick show (Moncton) promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Manitoba will be without a show this year, but promises a strong show in 2008.

In addition to the two long-standing Alberta wood shows (Edmonton and Calgary), there will be a third show added in Red Deer.

For a complete listing of all Canadian wood shows, click here.

As for this month’s eNewsletter, we’ve got some great tool news from: Busy Bee Tools; CH Hansen; Ridgid; Forrest; ESTA-USA; Steel City Tools; King; and Black and Decker.

Read on to see what these manufacturers have in store for you.

Oh yeah, I also want to share a bit of a gloat with you regarding our website’s ‘woodworking forum’. Last week we had a record day of activity – a whooping 506 woodworkers were all actively using our forum at one time. Imagine, asking a question or listening in on over 500 woodworkers discussing their hobby. It just doesn’t get any better.

If you haven’t gotten in on the ‘forum’ action, be sure to check it out.

Whether you have a burning question that needs an answer yesterday, or you just want to see what other woodworkers are wondering about or working on, the ‘woodworkers forum’ is an excellent place to start. There is a link to the forum at the bottom of this page (see 'Canadian Woodworking's most popular web page').

Enjoy!

Forrest Finger Joint Blade Set
Check out the new two-piece Finger Joint Set from Forrest Manufacturing, specifically designed for cutting finger joints, rabbets, and square bottom grooves without scoring or chipping.

Unlike dovetail joints, finger joints are square instead of angled, usually evenly spaced, and require glue to hold together. While a conventional dado set can leave scoring marks on finger joints, this new Forrest blade set delivers clean cut rips with the grain of the wood.

The Finger Joint Set consists of two reversible, interlocking, 8" blades with 24 teeth each and a standard 5/8" bore. The blades can be reversed to make 1/4" and 3/8" cuts.

These blades are made with high-grade carbide tips and are hand straightened to ensure perfect flatness. Their exceptional perimeter concentricity produces a side run out of +/- .001" for precision cutting - expect a 50% to 300% longer life between sharpenings.

Self-Set from ESTA-USA
ESTA-USA Inc. & DISPOZ-A-BLADE LLC has expanded the line of the world’s first Self Setting knife for use in most popular planers. First introduced to fit 6 & 8” jointers, the Self-Set is now available for both jointers and planers to replace troublesome conventional knives. The Self-Set knife installs in the machines ordinary stock cutterhead, eliminating the need to buy special costly cutterheads. Self-Set Knives require no machine modifications or the use of jack screws, springs, setting gauges, jigs or measuring tools. The disposable double edge factory sharp inserts are available in either HSS or Kobalt steel. The time it takes to change knives has now been reduced to the time needed to loosen the cutter head gib bolts, replace the dull edge and retighten. 6 string "Trevor"

Headstock

Trevor Boehm, Waldheim, SK

This steel-string guitar constructed by grade 12 student, Trevor Boehm, is the first such instrument to be completed at Waldheim School Industrial Arts.

This small shop in rural Saskatchewan has had students constructing electric guitars and basses for about ten years. "Trevor’s guitar marks the culmination of several years of planning and jig construction and we were really excited to hear the first notes from it", says Glen Friesen, instructor at Waldheim School. The neck, back and sides are constructed from mahogany; the soundboard is Sitka spruce and the fret board is made from ebony.

Trevor added a number of personal touches by inlaying his initials in the peg head in abalone. He also used an abalone inlay around the sound hole and selected an abalone pick guard.

The guitar was constructed from scratch - all wooden pieces were hand-crafted from larger dimensional stock. Trevor constructed his own bindings and purfling from cocobolo and poplar. This is the third guitar that he has constructed in the school shop. His grade 10 project was the shop-standard 6-string electric and in grade 11, he designed and constructed his own unique electric baritone guitar. Trevor will be graduating from Waldheim School in June and hopes to explore a career as a luthier.

Richard Puttenham, Winnipeg

While I have done many renovation projects around the house over the last few years I still consider myself a novice woodworker. My goal is to learn chip carving and to build small boxes. I really enjoy your magazine because it is not dedicated to one aspect of woodworking. Each issue has wonderful projects for cabinet makers, furniture artists, wood turners, and carvers.

This project is based on the Coffee Table featured in issue #31 (Aug/Sept 2004) of your magazine. My first attempt to glue up the top is still propped up in the workshop as a reminder about the evils of hydro-lock and using too little glue. I modified the plans slightly by removing the plywood dividers from the top and bottom drawers. In the bottom draw I used DVD rails available from Lee Valley. The top drawer I left wide open to store remote controls, TV listings and coasters.

After doing this project I can really appreciate the usefulness of a router table.
