From the Publisher
Paul Fulcher

Along with our usual coverage of new products this month, we are introducing a new Readers Write column.

We often receive woodworking tips, comments on products, short reviews of products, new takes on woodworking techniques, and other interesting tidbits. Beginning in this issue we'll be selecting the best of the submissions and printing them in upcoming eNewsletters.

Each published submission will receive a prize from one of our advertisers. Our first winner is Tom West, of Baden, ON, who shares a cautionary note on using thin walled containers with cyclone lids.

Tom receives a $50 gift certificate from R&D Bandsaw, which he can redeem for Tufftooth® bandsaw blades, bandsaw accessories, Olson scroll saw blades, Kreg products and more.

So flex those finger muscles and send us your tips, suggestions, comments, expositions, suggestions, reviews, and remarks.

Enjoy!

Paul

Irwin Quick Adjusting Wrench

Irwin Pro Touch Snap Knife

Implosion
By Tom West

I moved into a new shop space that was too small to accommodate a conventional dust collection system. Instead, I installed 2" rigid plastic piping around the periphery of the shop, with blast gates at each machine, connected to a shop vacuum. After using this system just a few times I found that the vacuum canister filled up all too quickly, because of its small size, and the that it didn't provide a lot of suction, probably because the vacuum wasn't powerful enough.

I decided to rectify the problem by buying a new heavy duty vacuum (with an impressive 6.25 HP motor and 175 CFM of air flow), and to install a large 26 gallon galvanized garbage can, equipped with a cyclone lid, to give me extra dust collection capacity. The cyclone lid is supposed to create a cyclonic action forcing heavier chips to fall to the bottom of the garbage can, with the finer dust being sucked into the vacuum canister. Which translates into a lot less time spent emptying the vacuum canister.

After taping the cyclone lid nice and tight onto the garbage can, which I thought would eliminate any air leakage, I flicked on the vacuum. Rather than the soothing whirr of dust being drawn into the garbage can, there was the enervating crunch of metal - the garbage can had imploded! I had inadvertently closed all the blast gates. I've since replaced the galvanized can with a thicker walled rigid plastic garbage can, reinforced with a round plywood rib and a bottom. It works like a charm now - and I always remember to keep at least one blast gate open.
