Issue 69
March 2010

Well here is another newsletter busting at the seams with great woodworking and home improvement events that you're not going to want to miss. The K-W Wood Show is going to be a real blast. I'll be there with my own lecture area called the '80/20 Workshop' where I'll be demonstrating joinery techniques that use 80% machines and 20% hand tools.

Speaking of hand tools, Rosewood Studio will be hosting the first Canadian Lie Nielson Hand Tool Event. I'll be there this weekend demonstrating various Lie Nielson hand tools and answering questions about hand tools and woodworking in general.

The Ottawa Home and Garden Show is going to be must see event. If you are considering working on your home at all this season you don't want to miss the chance to check out all of the experts and vendors to help guide your next home project. I'll be there speaking in the lecture area about how to best take care of your wood furniture and how to stock your DIY tool box effectively and economically. I'll also have a booth with some examples of my work and I'll be answering questions about furniture quality and the advantages of studio style furniture ... like I said, another jam-packed issue. Enjoy.

Work safe ... Work proud.

SKIL Floors Users with New-to-Industry Saw

Drawing from the brand’s expertise in cutting and their innovative product development process, SKIL is proud to unveil the latest addition to a full product offering, the SKIL Flooring Saw.  The SKIL Flooring Saw allows do-it-yourselfers and installation professionals alike to leave their bench top tools in their workshops and upgrade to a multi-functioning saw.

Designed to cut through hardwood, laminate and engineered flooring up to 8 inches wide and ¾ inch thick, the SKIL Flooring Saw smoothly makes mitre cuts between zero to 47 degrees and also quickly transitions to a fixed saw allowing rip cuts to width.

“The ability to make both mitre cuts and rip cuts in all wood flooring types with one saw makes this tool a pioneering product that DIYers and flooring installers are going to appreciate,” said Garth Prince, Product Marketing Manager for SKIL.  “Whether your installation project takes you to the attic or the basement, our new Flooring Saw offers the ultimate in cutting innovation. After receiving extremely positive feedback from installers who tested it during development, we know they’re looking forward to its launch. DIYers are also going to see this saw as a great alternative to larger bench top tools for their flooring projects.”

The saw features a large aluminum tabletop with mitre detents at the most popular angles, ensuring cutting accuracy for all skill and experience levels.  SKIL’s engineering team had the foresight to design the tabletop height to 1 ½ inches, the same height as a piece of scrap 2x material or two pieces of stacked oak hardwood flooring. This allows for support of extra long flooring pieces so they don’t bend or tip off the table during cuts, increasing accuracy and safety.  The SKIL Flooring Saw comes with a 40-tooth carbide tipped blade – which provides a clean cut without shredding laminate or splintering oak.  Additional features include a built-in cord wrap, a handle for easy portability and a convenient push stick that stores under the table top.  Available online and in select retail and hardware stores nationwide beginning in March, the new SKIL Flooring Saw (model # 3600) will have a suggested retail price of $159.

For more information, check out the complete course description on the web. Positions on the course are limited so don't miss your chance.

Tables Without Reservations

Rosewood Studio welcomes back Garret Hack who will be teaching a great course on designing and making side tables. Here is what Garret has to say about the course:

"Small side tables like these are always useful, they're a great design project, and fun to build. I often try out new ideas in a small table first — an inlay design, leg shape, tabletop edge profile, or apron details. During this class we are going to build tables from start to finish, from drawings to the shellac, and end with a final extremely useful critique of what we've made. Above all, this is a week of fun and exploration."

Garret has a wealth of hand tool and design knowledge so you don't want to miss this one. The skills you learn with Garret improve the quality of your woodworking and will increase your personal arsenal of techniques that you can apply to any project. For more information, check out the complete course description on the web. Positions on the course are limited so don't miss your chance to learn from one of the most talented woodworkers in the world.

The 5-day course runs from the 5th to the 9th of April, 2010.
