Steel City Tool Works 13" Portable Planer

Steel City Tool Works have just added a new 13" portable planer to their line up of woodworking machinery.

The SCTW 40200 features a 15 amp motor, 8000 rpm cutterhead with 3 quick change reversible, knives, feed rates of 16 and 23 feet per minute, a 4 column lead screw design, and polyurethane feed rollers. The table size is 13 1/4" by 33", and the planer weighs a hefty 66 pounds.

An eight position turret depth stop makes for super fast and precise height adjustment settings from 1/4" to 1 1/2".  There is a 4" dust port.

All Steel City machines come with a 5 year warranty.

New Product Offerings from Langevin & Forest

Montreal based Langevin & Forest have added several new product lines for 2007.

These include the new Incra LS Super System 2000 precision fence for router tables, drill presses or band saws. It enables precise fence movements of up to 1/1000". (We`ll be looking at the Super System in the June/July issue of Canadian Woodworking Magazine).

They have expanded their line of Pfeil carving tools, including the new shoulder knives. Shoulder knives are particularly suited for making ornaments. The long and slender ash handle rests against the carver`s shoulder allowing the blade to move with precision and little effort. The shoulder knife is available with a straight or curved blade.

Their line of Japanese saws include Azebiki, Dozuki and Ryoba style saws. The thinner, harder blades allow for smooth and accurate cuts with less effort than Western style saws.

New Dust Collection Products from Busy Bee Tools

CT122

CT120
Busy Bee Tools has four new dust collection products - two cyclone dust collectors, and two down draft tables.

The CT122 is a 2-stage cyclone with a 12 amp 2 HP motor.

It features a 14" impeller, a 1 micron canister and a V-weave spun bond polyester filter. The collector holds a clear polyurethane bag with a 40 gallon capacity.

The unit has a footprint of 34" x 51" and is 76" high, and is 305 lbs. It has a 78dB noise rating. Comes with a 3 year warranty.

Also available is the CT123, a 3 HP model.

The CT120 is a 22 pound portable downdraft table.

It features a steel frame, non-skid rubber grommets, 6 adjustable stops to secure work pieces to the surface, and a 2 1/2" dust port with a 4" reducer. Table size measures 18 1/2" x 35 1/2".

The CT121 has the same basic features in a smaller table size - 18 1/2" x 22".

Ridgid R2600 Shop Vacuum

The Ridge Tool Company have announced two new Ridgid brand industrial two-stage wet/dry vacuums, designed specifically for clean up of heavy debris and liquids - the 14-gallon (Model No. RV2400A) and the 16-gallon (Model No. RV2600B) drum (shown).

The stronger, quieter RV two-stage proprietary motor series and its patented blower wheel are designed to handle heavy debris and liquid more quickly and efficiently.

A three-layer pleated filter has a large surface area for increased motor efficiency and long life. The two models convert to a blower, with 150 mph blowing velocity.

Both models feature a rugged polypropylene drum, which is impact and corrosion resistant, as well as a durable two-layer ProHose that is 10 feet long. Combined with the vacuums longer, 25-foot power cord, the user can cover more of the jobsite.

An automatic suction shut-off function senses and prevents liquid overflow. The integral plug makes draining the vacuum quick and easy.

Tormek Truing and Dressing Tool

TORMEK has developed a new Truing and Dressing Tool with screw feed for its water cooled sharpening system.

You can feed the diamond cutter tip across the stone with a built in screw feed. The conventional way is that you press with your thumb to feed the cutter across the stone, which can sometimes be a problem.

The new tool TT-50 both trues the stone exactly round and dresses the surface flat without leaving ridges.

The other benefit is that the TT-50 is locked on the Universal Support of the machine, which means that the cutting depth can conveniently be set with high precision using the Micro Adjust.

Due to the screw feed, you can decide the character of the stone by altering the speed of the feed. At the normal feed speed of 90 seconds across the stone, you achieve a smooth surface. If you need a coarser surface for faster steel removal, you increase the feed speed to 30 seconds across the stone. A faster steel removal is beneficial when grinding HSS tools with a large bevel area.

If you are an owner of the ADV-50 Truing Tool you can purchase the TT-50U without the diamond cutting tip at a reduced price and mount your existing cutter tip.

Product Recalls

DeWalt has announced a safety recall on its DeWalt D55143 Three-Gallon Hand-Carry Oil Free Air Compressors.

The insulation on the motor lead wire may abrade from contact with the motor rotor, posing a potential shock hazard. The affected model is: DEWALT D55143. For more information click here.

DeWalt has also issue a recall of certain DW378G/DW378GT 7-1/4" Framing Saws and DC300 7-1/4" Circular Saws because the saw's lower blade guard may fail to fully close, leaving the blade exposed and presenting a risk of injury. For more information click here.

Self-Set Jointer Blade System

One of the common complaints with jointers is the time that it takes to replace the blades. Removing the blades isn't the issue - properly setting them is. For best results the blades need to be precisely parallel to the jointer table.

The new Self-Set knife system from Esta-USA, manufacturers of the very popular Dispoz-A-Blade system, provides a quick and easy way to install blades in virtually any 6" or 8" jointer.

The system consists of an integrated holder and double-edged, premium quality, high speed steel disposable blades. You simple drop the holders and blades into the cutterhead pockets, and you're back to work. Simple, quick, and convenient. More...

Veritas Iron Edge Trimming Plane

Veritas Pullshave

Norton 3X Premium Grinding Wheel

Marty Schlosser, Ottawa

Marty`s bar table measures a respectable 4' by 11'. Materials are solid yellow birch for the countertop, trim wine rack and doors, with birch ply for the panels.

The bar is finished with Fuhr's waterborne stain and Target Coating's waterborne polyurethane and waterborne lacquer for the countertop.

All finishes were sprayed on using a Fuji Q4-Pro HVLP turbine system, which left a glassy-smooth surface requiring no rubbing out whatsoever.

Chris vanderZwan, Richmond, ON

This gorgeous hand-crafted CD cabinet by Ottawa woodworker Chris vanderZwan is made of select cherry.

The top and sides are cut from the same plank for a wrap-around grain effect. All boards were re-sawn and milled, then hand-planed and shaped to their final dimension.

Four of the shelves (2 at the top, 2 at the bottom) have steel rods "hidden" behind the front edge, allowing the treble and base clefs to be held in place with rare-earth magnets.

The back is made from 5 "matching" cherry veneered panels (both sides) and a solid cherry mortise-and-tenon frame.

The four outside corners of the cabinet are joined with hand-cut half-blind dovetails and the top and bottom were subsequently rounded to soften the look.

The treble clef and base clef are hand carved out of solid quilted maple (a less common form of "figured" maple) and are held in place with a combination of rare-earth magnets and a brass pin (for vertical alignment). They can be removed or slid across the entire width of the cabinet to access the CD's normally stored behind them.

The legs were cut and shaped from a 2" thick block of Dark Walnut and are curved to compliment the lines of the cabinet ends.

When viewed from the end/side they resemble another musical symbol, the "tie".
All pieces were finished with a coat of tung oil sealer, followed by 2 coats of polymerized tung oil and an application of furniture polish.

The cabinet will store 120 CD's within the "ledger lines" plus additional storage in the open middle section.

James Bloomfield, Port Rowan, ON

James built this Fishing Rod Stand from the plans in the Feb/Mar 2007 issue of the magazine (Issue 46).

This version uses red oak and is left unfinished.

A pair of carved fish grace the ends.
James will be donating the fishing rod stand to the Long Point Lions Club for their charity auction in June 2007.
