Welcome to the Canadian Woodworking eNewsletter

Spring is a welcome time of year, not only because of the extended daylight hours and milder weather, but also because of the flood of new woodworking products we generally see.

And this May is no exception. There are lots of new products from Steel City Tool Works, Lee Valley Tools, Bosch and Irwin.

If you are one of the many woodworkers who has a General 350 or 650 series table saw you'll be especially interested in their new riving knife retro-fit kits.

For those looking for a work bench, check out the new line of innovative Walko Benches now being carried by Ultimate Tool Supply. Pricey, but oh so cool!

Good woodworking!

Two New Hand Planes From Lee Valley

Veritas Small Plow Plane

Veritas Small Scraping Plane

Lee Valley Tools has added two new items to its Veritas line of fine hand tools: the Veritas Small Plow Plane, which comes in both right hand and left hand models, and the Veritas Small Scraping Plane.

The Small Plow Plane ($239 with a 1/4" blade or $289 with a set of five blades - 1/8" to 3/8") is ideal for quickly cutting grooves and rabbets. The 6 5/8" fence registers solidly to the work piece while double guide rods prevent the fence from racking.

The Scraping Plane ($129), with a 2" wide blade, has an articulating palm for a comfortable, controlled grip. The blade is set at 20°, the optimum angle for fine scraping.

Concave Face Blade for Wood-Plastic Composite Materials

Forrest Manufacturing has introduced a blade specially designed to meet the challenges of cutting wood-plastic composites, also known as "faux wood." The Concave Face blade runs cool, prevents melting and fusing, and produces smooth cuts. "The teeth on the blade have a unique hollow-concave face so only the highest points on each edge cut through the material. This reduces resistance, so there’s less heat build up," explains Tony Ferrato, sales and engineering representative, Forrest Manufacturing.

New Riving Knife Retro-fit Kits from General

There are now Riving Knife Retro-fit Kits for the General MFG 350 (right tilt) and 650 (left tilt) Cabinet saws.

The kits include:

Cast-iron saw chute assembly.
Cast-iron arbor bracket assembly (with arbor) with built-in quick-release riving knife mounting block/receptacle.
Riving style splitter/blade guard assembly with anti-kickback pawls.
A separate European style riving knife.
Table insert.
Installation manual and DVD.

Because of the major re-design of the saw that was required to incorporate a "true" riving knife (that raises and lowers in tandem with the blade), this retro-fit does require a fairly complicated partial disassembly, swap out of some of the major internal components, and then re-assembly and re-alignment of the saw.

Upgraded Irwin Quick Grip Clamps

IRWIN Industrial Tool Company, announces the upgraded one-handed bar clamp, IRWIN QUICK-GRIP XP600, with extreme pressure for heavy duty applications like installation and rough glue-ups. The XP600 has an I-beam bar that delivers up to 600 lbs. of hold force, while the patent pending Power Lock™ system can hold more pressure, longer. IRWIN QUICK-GRIP XP600 clamps are available at home centres, retail hardware stores, industrial tool distributors and woodworking supply houses in 6", 12", 18", 24", 36" and 50" lengths. Depending on the length of the clamp, the suggested retail price will vary from $24.99 - $49.99.

Bosch Enters Pneumatic Fastening Market

SN350-20F Full Head Framing Nailer

Bosch has unveiled a full family of nailers and compressors that represent, in many ways, a re-invention of the category. The innovation Bosch developed is 'Full Force Technology', a patented air chamber design that enables nailers to utilize 100 percent of the air coming from the compressor to drive the fastener, rather than saving air in reserve to return the driver to the "ready" position. The net result is a family of nailers that are 20 percent smaller and 10 percent more powerful than comparable tools and that deliver the best power-to-size ratio in the category.

Titebond 50 Wood Adhesive Now in High-Viscosity Formulations

Two new versions of Titebond 50 Wood Adhesive are three to five times thicker than the original Titebond 50 yet retain the same valuable performance characteristics of this well-known aliphatic resin emulsion adhesive, used globally for edge and face gluing as well as general assembly.

Titebond 50 HV has a high viscosity of 12,000 to 15,000 cps – easily tripling the thickness of the original adhesive. This viscosity resists running, ensuring neater glue-ups and reducing time spent in cleaning machinery and the work area. The new Titebond 50 HHV has an even higher viscosity of 19,000 to 21,000 cps and is drip-free, eliminating glue dribble during assembly of wood products.

Woodworkers Guide to Bending Wood

Fox Chapel Publishing has released two new books: "Woodworker's Guide to Bending Wood" by Jonathan Benson (ISBN: 978-1-56523-360-7), and "Woodworker's Guide to Dovetails" by Ernie Conover (ISBN: 978-1-56523-387-4).

The Woodworker's Guide to Bending Wood is a comprehensive instructional guide that teaches woodworkers how to easily enhance their woodworking with curved surfaces, like those found on beautiful pedestal tables, guitars, shaker boxes, curved handrails and more. It provides methods for bending with heat, steam, water, and how to bend green wood, veneers and laminations.

Woodworker's Guide to Dovetails is a comprehensive instructional guide that teaches woodworkers how to create both hand-cut and machined dovetails. Scott Phillips, the Host of American Woodshop, has called this book a "masterpiece!"
