Rockwell Jawhorse

Sawhorses of one kind or another and portable work stations, for the shop or on the jobsite are incredibly useful; witness the enormous popularity of the Workmate, still going strong after 36 years. The Jawhorse, from Rockwell Tools, is a portable workstation that excels at holding and clamping material up to 37 1/2" wide. Think of it as an oversized clamp, a universal stand, or a second pair of hands.

The Jawhorse is constructed of plate steel and weighs a sturdy 43 pounds. It's very well constructed; the only non metal parts are the jaw pads and knobs. It has a tripod base and wide feet that make it very stable on uneven surfaces. When open, it stands 31 1/2" high (at bed level), and takes up about 39" x 39" of floor space. It takes less than 30 seconds to fold the Jawhorse for easy transport or storage. There is a built-in roller under the front end of the jaw, and when folded, you can use the back leg and the roller to tote the Jawhorse around the workshop or job site.

The replaceable clamping pads are 3" x 8" - large enough to get a solid grip on just about anything you'll ever need to hold. You have two options when it comes to using a miter saw or other power tool. You can mount a plywood base to a 2 x 4 and clamp it on the Jawhorse, or purchase the optional Miter Saw Station (#RK9110, $80), which comes with a mounting base and infeed/outfeed rollers that you mount on a 2 x 4.

The clamping system is foot activated. You simply place the work piece between the jaws, pull the movable jaw against the work piece, flip the lock switch to the 'locked' position, and use your foot to apply clamping pressure. The foot activated ratcheting system is at the heart of the Jawhorses' powerful clamping system. It exerts up to 2000 pounds of clamping pressure. To release the clamp you flip the lock switch to the 'unlocked' position, and press down on the foot pedal. Extremely quick.

This is a great tool for a cabinetmaker, carpenter, electrician, plumber or any tradesperson. It's extremely rugged and very versatile. DIYer's and home will love how easy it is to use and how little space it takes up in a garage or basement shop.
