Lots of news this month from a variety of dealers and manufacturers: Steel City introduces a new granite wheel for their band saws; CarveWright introduces a compact and powerful woodcarving machine, available at Busy Bee; Forrest releases their Thin Rim blades; a super sale on Freud tools; and a brand new book from Graham McCulloch: The Woodworker's Illustrated Encyclopedia.

There's also lots of stuff happening here at the Canadian Woodworking office - we have a number of new staff on board, so there is going to be some shuffling around in positions.

For instance, our editor will be taking over sending you this eNewsletter, so it will be his head and words at the top of this page instead of mine. I will still play a major part in both the magazine and eNewsletter, but I will be more 'behind the scenes'.

I hope that just because I will be 'out of sight', I won't be 'out of mind'.

Please keep in touch.

Steel City Introduces Granite Wheels on its 14" Bandsaw

Steel City has now added a granite lower wheel to their 14-inch Deluxe Bandsaw that already boasted a granite table top (model 50100G).

According to Scott Box, Steel City’s president, “The more we thought about using granite in some of our woodworking machines, the more sense it made. Granite is harder than stainless steel. It absorbs vibration better. And it will never rust, spring twist or warp. So it’s virtually maintenance free. Initial market reaction indicates that woodworkers agree.”

The newly designed solid granite lower wheel makes sense because it’s perfectly balanced as it’s machined. The heavy mass of the lower granite wheel gives it more inertia when spinning, and the granite absorbs the vibrations from the motor, belt and shaft.

 PSS sharpener from M.POWER

The PSS is an innovative new sharpener from M.POWER.

The PSS uses a lateral sharpening stroke, rather than the conventional  figure eight motion on a benchstone.

The process is quite simple: select a diamond stone grade, pop it on the carriage, and slide the chisel in. Hold the chisel still and move the carriage across the face of the tool, letting the diamond abrasive do the work. The process is that simple, the results remarkable.

The DMT stone sharpens across the width of the blade. This results in the microscopic striations or groves running laterally, rather than meeting the blade edge head-on, as on conventional benchstones. The result is a finer quicker edge for less work.

The PSS can sharpen chisels and blades up to 2 1/2" wide.
