I have just returned from Moncton NB, after attending the last wood show of my annual circuit.
I wasn't able to attend as many wood shows this year as in previous years, but of those that I was able to attend, I thoroughly enjoyed (and appreciated) all of the visits that I got in with both magazine and eNewsletter subscribers.
In those visits, I received a lot of appreciative comments on the changes that we have made to the magazine. As well, there were a lot of great suggestions on what readers want to see in upcoming issues.
To summarize, readers are enjoying the 'Home Improvement' aspect of the magazine, and really like that those projects are 'woodworking based'. There was also a lot of interest in our new 'FinerDetails' section of the magazine, which highlights a specific technique which can be incorporated into various woodworking projects. The FinerDetails article is the brain child of Rob, and he's got some awesome installments coming up for you in future issues.
There were also a number of people who dropped by just to say how much they look forward to (and laugh out loud at) our 'WoodChuckle' article. Several of those who stopped by to comment on Don's work even admitted to seeing a bit of themselves in his work. It seems that there is a bit of Don in all of us.
As for comments on this eNewsletter, I heard from quite a few subscribers that they like how timely our coverage of new tools is. Many commented that they read about new tool announcements in our eNewsletter months before they see it anywhere else.
So, without further adieu, read on to find out what's new in the woodworking industry.
Enjoy!

New Excalibur 16 inch Tilting Head Variable Speed Scroll Saw
The new EX-16 Excalibur scroll saw includes all of the key features that scrollers have come to expect from the Excalibur brand.
This new 16” throat capacity saw offers the same unique titling head design as the larger EX-21 and EX-30 models. The 45° left or right tilting head tilts the blade, not the table, keeping the workpiece level and allowing for better control, more accurate cuts, as well as consistent, comfortable hand positioning at all times, regardless of the angle of cut.
The EX-16 has a large 12” x 18 1/2” table made from 3/8-inch thick plate steel with a smooth-glide friction-free coating and offers a maximum cutting depth of 2”.
Weighing in at a robust 68 lbs the ¼-inch thick, laser-cut steel plate chassis is built for maximum stability and minimal vibration. The saw is equipped with a high-quality 120V 1.3 Amp motor, for ample cutting power. A front mounted electronic variable speed control knob allows for blade speed adjustment from 400 to 1550 strokes per minute, allowing the user to dial-in the correct speed to suit the material, blade and type of cut, for maximum efficiency.
Like all Excalibur scroll saws, the EX-16 is equipped with an onboard flexible dust blower, an adjustable workpiece hold-down and is designed for quick and easy tool-free blade changes using finger operated blade clamps that accept all 5-inch unpinned type scroll saw blades. The easy access blade tensioning system tensions the blade in two places; with a quick tension lever right above the blade, and a fine-tune adjustment knob that adjusts the height of the upper arm at the top rear of the saw.
A unique upper arm lift feature saves time by making frequent blade location changes for inside cutting applications on complex pieces fast and easy, by holding the arm in the up position so that the bottom end of the blade can be fed down through the workpiece from above.
The Excalibur by General International EX-16 is currently retailing for $ 529.99 (price valid until at least Feb 28th, 2011) and can be ordered from most General/General International retail distributors – a complete list of distributors can be found on the General website.
An optional adjustable height steel stand (#EX-21BS $ 119.00) and 110V 15 amp foot switch (#EX-01 - $ 24.95) are also available.

Forrest Manufacturing Introduces a Thin Kerf 48-Tooth Woodworker II Saw Blade
The New Blade Minimizes Resistance When Cutting Rips or Cross Cuts
and is Ideal for Use on Lower-Power Saws.
Forrest Manufacturing now offers a thin kerf version of its popular 48-tooth (1048)Woodworker II blade. This thin kerf version of their general-purpose blade has been especially designed for lower-power saws, such as those that are 110 volt, .75 to 1.5 HP.”
Vice President Forrest highlighted some of the new blade’s advantages by saying,“The narrower kerf means the blade cuts through less material. The amount of friction and heat produced is reduced, and not as much force is required when feeding the material into the saw. As a result, the thinner kerf helps minimize wastage when working with expensive, high-quality woods.”
Both the thin kerf and standard versions of the 1048 Woodworker II have a conventional 10-inch diameter and a 5/8-inch bore. Although especially suited for manufacturing picture frames or other products that require hundreds of cross-grain cuts, these blades are a wise investment for any woodworker who desires a reliable, fine-quality, all-purpose combination blade. Like all Forrest blades, the Thin Kerf 1048 Woodworker II is precision engineered from corrosion-resistant, super-strong C-4 micrograin carbide. This gives it up to 300 percent longer life between sharpenings than other carbide blades. And, as is the case with other Forrest blades, the Thin Kerf 1048 Woodworker II is hand-straightened to ensure perfect flatness and has exceptional perimeter concentricity and side runout of +/- .001.
To help ensure continued performance, Forrest Manufacturing offers state-of-the-art factory sharpening at a reasonable cost. Customers have the satisfaction of knowing that the Thin Kerf 1048 Woodworker II is made in the United States and comes with Forrest’s highly respected 30-day, money-back guarantee. The model number for the 10-inch blade is WW10487100. The list price is $ 134.00

New Product Release From Veritas: Carcass Saws
These saws carry forward the same design principles used to develop Veritas innovative dovetail saws, adopting selected traits of traditional carcass saws and rendering them using innovative materials and modern manufacturing methods.
Typically used to cut joints in drawer runners, dividers, and stretchers (the framework or carcass of a piece), they are well balanced, maneuverable, and scaled for smaller work than a tenon saw.
Available in rip and crosscut versions. The 12 tpi rip saw has a 10° rake angle and an included angle of 60° for efficient cutting parallel to the grain. The 14 tpi crosscut saw has a rake angle of 15°, an included angle of 60°, and teeth filed with alternating 15° bevels so they sever wood fibers rather than tear them.
The teeth on each have relatively minimal set, at only 0.003Й per side. Each saw has a molded spine that incorporates stainless-steel powder for weight, glass fiber for stiffness, and an advanced polymer binder. An over-molded blade and stainless-steel handle-mounting bolt create a solid one-piece blade/spine/mount assembly. A single brass fastener secures the bubinga handle. The open-grip handle, made larger than those of classic carcass saws, permits a comfortable, secure grip. Offered individually or as a pair. Patented.
A. 05T07.05 Rip Carcass Saw, 12 tpi $ 69.00
B. 05T07.01 Crosscut Carcass Saw, 14 tpi $ 69.00
