Issue 64
October 2009

Despite the reports of trying financial times, I am pleased to see so many new woodworking products being released. I guess it's going to take more than a recession to keep us Canadian woodworkers down eh? All you have to do is take a look at the long list in this newsletter of new products that have been made available to us. Notably, Veritas keeps on churning out high quality tools with the hand tool user in mind.
Speaking of hand tools, a writer who will be appearing in our magazine next year has a book coming out this November entitled 'Made By Hand - Furniture Projects from the Unplugged Workshop'. Tom Fidgen takes the reader through his woodworking processes – techniques that only involve hand tools. I've always said if you want to save money in the shop, learn more hand tool skills. This book will teach you skills like how to chop mortises by hand - removing the need for a router or mortiser as well as other essential hand tool skills.
Don't forget about the upcoming wood shows. I'll be in Abbotsford, Edmonton, and Calgary giving lectures on Hand Tools and Design. As well, I will be avaiable for the duration of the show in a Q&A booth where you can drop in and chat about woodworking, ask questions or tell me what you think of the magazine. Those who know me know that I love to talk shop so I encourage you to drop in and say hi. I will also have a workbench in my booth where I will be working on a couple handmade Christmas projects – so you never know when an impromptu hand tool demo will crop up. I look forward to meeting our readers so please stop by and introduce yourself.

Work safe . . . work proud.

Tool Review

Once again the folks at Veritas have hit the mark with the recent release of the Veritas Small Shoulder Plane. Out of the box, there is a noticeable difference with this plane. The small version of a complete line of shoulder planes does not have the hole through the body and the knobs on top to grip the plane. In my opinion, this is a good thing because the small size of this plane doesn't lend itself to the normal grip pattern of the other Veritas shoulder planes. What it does have is the same level of fit and finish that we have come accustom to with Veritas tools. The blade, like all blades that Veritas makes, comes pre-flatten. It only took approximately 60 sec. to get a mirror finish on the back of the blade with an 8000 grit stone.
The small size of this plane is where the real magic is. The Small Shoulder Plane allows you to work on smaller scale work; saving you from trying to wield a larger tool into a small spot. I recently used the Small Shoulder Plane to refine a small incised cockbead on a table I was building. The width of the plane at 1/2" was perfect for removing the arris from the quirk of the bead. At 6 1/4" long and weighing 1 lb 2 oz., I was able to take a straight shot that I knew was true because the length of the plane would give me enough bearing surface on the work. Like the other planes in this line, the toe is adjustable to close-up the mouth for maximum support ahead of the cut. The toe is also removable to allow you to work all the way into a stopped joint if necessary.
In my opinion, this is another fine tool that Veritas has added to their collection of hand tools. The plane is available at Lee Valley with either an A1 or O1 blade for $179.

Shop Tip

Wax Makes the Work Go Smoother

It has always amazed me that some of the best woodworking tips and tricks are so simple. The use of paraffin wax is one of those simple but indispensible products in my shop. I use wax at my bench often so I keep a puck of it in my apron all the time. The wax primarily gets used to lubricate the soles of planes while I'm working. The wax makes the pushing of a hand plane over wood much easier which allows you to plane for longer without fatigue. I also use wax as a lubricant when working with wood screws to reduce the friction between the wood and metal.
Paraffin wax comes in many forms but not all of them are easily stored in your apron. I make my own puck-shaped chunks of wax from granular wax. You can normally find this wax in the canning section of your local hardware or grocery store. The wax in this form looks like little 1/8" beads of wax that melt easily. To make my pucks, I fill small aluminum tart trays with the granular wax. Be sure to over-fill the trays slightly to ensure a good-sized puck. Place the pucks on a cookie sheet and place them in the oven at the lowest temperature possible. In my case, it was 170 degrees Celsius. Ensure that you check on your wax frequently (every couple of minutes) because if you leave them in to long they can start flaming (best not to ask how I know this). Once melted, carefully pull them out of the oven and leave them on the counter to cool until the wax hardens completely.
This technique yields small, round pucks that fit perfectly into apron pockets. I made a dozen of them four years ago and I'm still using the first one I started with. In other words, don't make too many of them unless you plan on giving them away to other woodworker friends like I did.

What's New?

Made By Hand – Tom Fidgen
Tom Fidgen has written his first book on woodworking entitled 'Made By Hand - Furniture Projects From the Unplugged Workshop' - the definitive book of how to build woodworking projects using hand tools. While there are a number of books on hand tools for woodworkers that provide information about hand tools and their individual uses, no one has put these tools to use on a project. In that regard, this book is unique and will fit in perfectly with the rapidly expanding category of hand-tool woodworking. The six projects and companion DVD offer excellent views of the hand tools in use, and the critical body positioning necessary. Tom will also be appearing in future issues of Canadian Woodworking and Home Improvement magazine with articles aimed at those woodworkers who want to learn more hand tool skills. You can pre-order Tom Fidgen's book by going to his website.

Work Sharp Expands Capabilities of Highly Successful Sharpener for Woodworkers

Professional Tool Manufacturing, an industry leader in sharpening and grinding tools for woodworkers, has released two new wheels for the popular Work Sharp sharpener. The wheels expand the capability of the Work Sharp, and respond to the needs of woodworkers who want the ability to easily de-burr parts, remove various coatings, and polish material to create a mirror finish on almost any material. With the addition of these wheels, the Work Sharp dry sharpener provides a more complete sharpening system compared to a typical bench grinder.
Designed for both fine woodworking professionals and woodworking hobbyists, Work Sharp solves several common problems associated with sharpening hand tools:  inconsistent results, grinding/honing the proper edge, keeping bevel edges square and grinding the entire bevel face. These new wheels integrate with Work Sharp to deliver the ease and precision which has been the rave of the extensive catalog of Work Sharp reviews.
With the Surface Conditioning Wheel (MSRP $24.95) users can de-burr parts, remove rust, paint, and other various coatings along with light sanding and surface preparation tasks on their Work Sharp. For those who want to create a mirror finish on almost any material, or perform some light de-burring, or honing tools to a precision edge, the new Felt Polishing Wheel (MSRP $29.95) will be a great addition to their Work Sharp. Both wheels can be flipped over for additional surface area to work with. Work Sharp can be found at: Home Hardare, Normand, KMS Tools, Morley Miller Machinery, Tegs Tools, and Welbeck Sawmill.

Studio Furniture of the Renwick Gallery published by Fox Chapel is a beautifully designed catalogue of the Renwick Gallery’s collection of American studio furniture. Inside, author Oscar P. Fitzgerald documents each of the 84 pieces, and provides intimate interviews with many of the surviving artists, who share their inspirations, workshop practices, and more. Appreciated for its careful craftsmanship, beautiful wood, sculptural form, and narrative nature, the studio furniture collection on permanent display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum constitutes one of the largest assemblages of American studio furniture in the nation. From the one-of-a-kind Ghost Clock sculpture by Wendell Castle to the rocking chairs from Sam Maloof, the collection highlights the astonishing variety of the studio furniture movement. Studio Furniture of the Renwick Gallery provides a vital resource for the history of modern American furniture makers and chronicles how the collection was amassed by the former administrators of the Renwick Gallery. A foreword by noted scholar and curator Paul Greenhalgh gives readers a brilliant overview of the studio furniture field. No student, collector, or furniture enthusiast should be without this coffee-table style book, available in hard or soft-cover that so beautifully illustrates such an important movement in modern craft.

The Dremel brand is expanding its line-up of EZ Lock-compatible rotary tool accessories with the introduction of the Detail Abrasive Brush in three different grit strengths. The brushes’ unique, flexible bristles are designed to improve users’ sanding capabilities by helping them get into tight, intricate spaces and contoured shapes without damaging their work piece.
The Detail Abrasive Brush is compatible with all multi-speed Dremel rotary tools and fits on both the 402 and EZ402 mandrels.
Each bristle on the brush is impregnated with sanding abrasive that wears down as the accessory is used to expose new grit, extending the accessory’s life and eliminating the need for abrasive compound. The brushes’ design allows users to remove only the exterior surface layer of their work piece without damaging the base layer. Detail Abrasive Brushes can be used for cleaning detailed surfaces on materials such as wood, aluminum, plastic, metal, steel and vinyl; and smoothing or de-burring wood after carving or routing. The brushes’ shape allows users to access contoured and hard-to-reach spaces such as crown molding or a chair railing. Each sanding brush is color coded by grit strength for easy identification.
The Detail Abrasive Brush is available beginning in August 2009 at most hardware stores and home improvement centers nationwide. Brushes retail in packages of one, for a suggested retail price of $9.99.

Rockler SpeedCope

Coped joints have long been the inside corner joint of choice among finish carpenters. To make them, a profile must be cut into the end of one piece matching the exact contour of the piece it will meet. The profiled piece then lays over the other piece of moulding, creating a tight joint. Traditionally, woodworkers would bevel the end of the soon-to-be profiled piece and use a coping saw to hand cut the profile along the bevelled edge. The SpeedCope accelerates this process with a stable platform that gives woodworkers the necessary control to make delicate cope cuts with a power jig saw.
Especially useful for high-volume production in the shop or on the job site, the SpeedCope mounts securely on bench tops or saw horses and is extremely stable, with built-in clamps to hold work pieces in place. Its sturdy base supports virtually any jig saw, giving users plenty of control to follow their intended cutting path.
The SpeedCope will accommodate moulding up to 7-1/4" wide and adjusts easily for 45º and 90º inside mitres, as well as chair moulding, panel moulding and more. With such versatility, it is the perfect tool for anyone facing a large moulding job, as well as those who simply want a
reliable, high-quality coping solution.
The Rockler SpeedCope (item #20047) includes a do-it-yourself moulding DVD and retails for US$149.99. It is available at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware stores nationwide, Rockler’s independent resellers, Rockler.com or from the Rockler catalogue. For store locations or a free catalogue, please visit www.rockler.com or call 1-800-279-4441.

Canadian Vectric Users Group

The first “Canadian Vectric Users Group Meeting” was held on Saturday September 19,2009. The Meeting was hosted by John Murphy of “J. Murphy CNC Woodworking” in Guelph, and took place at his shop on Regal Road. It was attended by both professional CNC woodworkers and hobbyists as well. Attendees came from as far west as Sarnia Ontario, and as far east as Granby Quebec as well as far north as Bracebridge.

The main focus of the meeting was to exchange ideas, tips and tricks for using CNC routers and Vectric’s software. James Booth of Toronto who was representing Vector Art 3D gave a detailed presentation of some of the more challenging software applications that was enlightening to all in the group to say the least. James used his laptop and a projector to walk us through the 3D modelling process, and touched on the creative aspects as well.

Most participants brought projects with them to share with the group. These beautiful pieces where admired by all, and sparked many questions about style and technique. Many of the participants have built their own custom made machines, and exchanged technical advice as well as sources for parts both mechanical and electrical. The professional CNC people discussed new products on the market, as well as exchanging some technical knowledge as well.

The day ended with a BBQ and informal chat among the participants. Many thanks to James Booth for his informative presentation, as well as all who participated in the event. Due to the great response, this may turn into a yearly event. Keep an eye on www.jmurphycnc.com for information on future events.

For the eleventh straight year, visitors will be able to touch wood at the, the only Quebec trade show entirely devoted to woodworking. Held in Saint-Hyacinthe October 16-17-18, this year’s edition will feature over 5,000 work of art created by more than 100 Quebec artisans, in a 50,000 square feet exhibit space.

Artisans and their creations come out of the woodwork!
Original, eclectic, practical, aesthetic! The ingenuity and savoir-faire of Quebec artisans is well represented in the furniture, decorative items, jewellery and toys exhibited and sold at the Foire du bois. Event founder Henri Turcot, says this year’s edition of the show will once again appeal to the public. “There is something for everyone at the Foire du bois. Whether you want to discover the works of Quebec craftspeople or are interested in learning various woodworking techniques, the Foire du bois offers all that and more under the same roof.”
It’s the ideal place to speak with woodworking specialists in jig-sawing, turning, sculpting, cabinet making, painting on wood, and arts and crafts. It is also an opportunity to discover exotic wood products, specialty books and an array of woodworking tools. A number of demonstrations will enable visitors to see the artisans at work and also learn about the many uses of highly specialized tools. The more curious can even attend training seminars on such subjects as furniture finishing or how to use a router.

Organized by Langevin & Forest, the Foire du bois will be held at the Hôtel des Seigneurs Convention Centre in Saint-Hyacinthe (1200 Johnson Street). Admission costs $10. Children under the age of 12 are admitted free of charge. Parking is available at the Hôtel des Seigneurs or at the Galeries de Saint-Hyacinthe.
To sign up for one of the seminars, you can go to the www.foiredubois.com website under the Activités section. For further information, do not hesitate to call 514 322-9330 or 1 800 889-2060.
