With the transition from summer to fall comes the brunt of the woodworking show season. Over the next seven weeks alone there are twelve shows scheduled nationwide, of which I'll be at eight.

I always look forward to this time of year, as it gives me the opportunity to meet many of our readers, a number of whom I can now count as friends. And of course, it gives me a chance to 'preach to the unconverted' as it were.

The wood shows are also important as they provide an opportunity for readers to tell me what they like and dislike about the magazine. I really count on this feedback to help us fine tune the content and look of the magazine.

Of course, you don't have to go to a wood show to let me know what you think about the magazine; you can call (800-204-1773), email me, or email our editor. Your feedback is important to us.

Enjoy!

Tormek Introduces New T-7 Sharpening System

Truing & Dressing Wheel
The new Tormek T-7 improves the accuracy and safety in edge tool sharpening thanks to two new innovations, a Square Edge Jig and a Truing and Dressing Tool with screw feed.

The Square Edge jig enables the user to repeatedly grind chisels and blades square, without any adjustments. This is achieved because the jig automatically aligns the chisel to its flat, machined face. It clamps short and tapered tools firmly and accepts blades up to 76 mm or 3" width. It also has safety stops, which prevent the tool from slipping off the stone, which can hurt your fingers.

The Truing and Dressing Tool has a unique screw feed that enables the user to keep the stone in perfect condition, which is essential for a perfectly sharpened edge.

A seven year warranty applies to all customers including industrial users. This is possible due to the improved coating of the housing, stainless steel main shaft and a powerful, industrial AC motor, which is designed for continuous operation.

The T-7 Sharpening System will sell for $499.99 at Advanced Machinery, Langevin & Forest, and Big Bear Tools.

The new C7BMR 7-1/4" Pro-Grade Circular Saw uses a patented Internal Double Insulation (IDI) technology that reduces vibration and wear, extending tool life over 200%. The saw features a  powerful 15 Amp motor with a no-load speed of 5,800 RPM, electric brake, aluminum housing, injection molded inner nylon core, double insulation, die-cast aluminum alloy cutting and bevel levers, bevel capacity from 0 - 55° with a positive stop at 45°, heavy-duty aluminum base, easily accessible carbon brush, and soft grip main and sub handles.

Forests Seen as Important in Fighting Climate Change

The August 2007 issue of Science sheds light on the importance of global forests as a key component in balancing carbon dioxide in the air, and reducing the effects of climate change.

In their article 'Carbon Mitigation by Biofuels or by Saving and Restoring Forests?', authors Renton Righelato and Dominick V. Spracklen, from the World Land Trust, compare emissions from various fuel crops versus carbon storage in natural ecosystems. They write that "forestation of an equivalent area of land would sequester two to nine times more carbon over a 30-year period than the emissions avoided by the use of the biofuel."

Whether or not you concur with the premise of global warming, there can be little doubt that forests are a significant, important and crucial element in a healthy planet.

Nice inlay on the head
Yaron Naor, Vancouver

Yaron is a multimedia designer who builds furniture in his free time. This is his first effort at building a guitar, which he built for himself after taking up guitar several years ago.

He learned the basics of guitar building from a book that he purchased and from  information he found on the Internet. He also consulted some guitar builders.

After that is was 'simply' a matter of going into the workshop and plugging away.

All told it took him 3 months to build and apply a finish to the guitar (including the time spent building and fine tuning the side bending machine and the other various jigs that he needed).

The woods (all quarter sawn) are from various special instruments maker's shops and consist of:

Sound board - Sitka Spruce AAAA Grade
Neck, back and sides - American black walnut (Claro)
Fret board and bridge - Indian rosewood
Neck lamination - hard maple veneers
Binding - Rosewood
Braces - Spruce

Yaron tells us that the guitar sounds great - we'll take him on his word. From the looks of these photos we can see that he's done a splendid job.
