The wood show season is upon us once again. I look forward to seeing many of you at the various wood shows I attend across Canada. Its a great opportunity to see new products, take advantage of the many show specials, and renew acquaintances.

To find the wood show nearest to your location, click here.

We'll be sending out our 2nd survey this week. Remember that you have until September 21 to respond. Not everyone will be receiving the survey - because we have such a large number of subscribers we will only be conducting a random survey. The prizes for this survey are:

Freud FT1700VCE 2 1/4hp router
Excalibur 50EB-3 Miter Guide
Hitachi DB10DL Lithium-ion Drill Driver

Enjoy,

Paul

Isoloc Joint Samples

Leigh Jigs has new finger joint and isoloc templates for the F18 and F24 Super Jigs.

All Leigh Super Jigs can produce 5/16" and 5/8" finger joints using the standard dovetail finger assembly. Now, with the new Leigh Finger Joint template and your 18" or 24" Super Jig, you can rout an additional six sizes of finger joints: 3/32", 3/16", 3/8" 1/8", 1/4" & 1/2". Following procedures in the User Guide you can also rout 3/4" and 1"joints. A Leigh technical bulletin provides instructions to route double and triple size joints, all with the same incredible accuracy.
Priced at $169.

With your Leigh 18" or 24" Super Jig and an Isoloc template you can easily rout half-blind decorative joints. Each template features two joint patterns, one design carefully CNC machined on each side of the template. A single 5/16" or 8mm straight bit, preferably an upcut spiral, does all the routing. There are three decorative patterns to choose from.

Ethereal Earth

Canadian woodturner, Brian McEvoy, known for pushing the envelope, with his skill and expertise has done it again, producing an incredible work of art.

Imagine turning a twelve inch diameter sphere only one-eight inch thick, carving and hand painting all the countries of the world to proper scale. Then piercing all the oceans to give a fragile look that Brian so strongly believes represents the state of the Earth today.

The globe is mounted at its proper axis of 22 1/2°. With the ball bearing mount, the globe can be rotated to any desired position. Turned from Alaskan Yellow Cedar and finished with acrylic ink and lacquer, this sculpture measures twenty inches high. To highlight the oceans, the inside of the sphere has been airbrushed with iridescent paints so you catch a glimmer of aquatic blue through the piercing.

Carl Duguay, Victoria, BC

A number of readers have asked if our magazine editor is a woodworker. Indeed he is, and here is a recent piece that he made. Look for several new furniture pieces from Carl in upcoming issues of the magazine.

The top, legs and frame for this chess table are made of makore. Edge banding, drawer handles, and the white chess squares are made of eastern maple, while the dark chess squares are wenge. The chess pieces, from Germany, are rosewood and boxwood.

The table measures approximately 28" high and 19" square. The top is French Polished while the rest of the table is finished with numerous coats of wiping varnish.
