40 Minutes of Powerful Suction – Cord-free and Hassle-free

Dyson V8

Dyson unveils latest generation of cord-free vacuums with double the battery life.
Tuesday, May 17, 2016 - Every vacuum cleaner uses a motor to generate suction. But not all motors are the same. Some cordless vacuum cleaners use small motors that can be weak, while others rely on heavy motors that can compromise versatility.
Thanks to the patented Dyson digital motor V8, which is compact but can spin at up to 110,000rpm, the Dyson V8 cord-free vacuum boasts powerful fade-free suction. Coupled with a larger battery pack and new battery chemistry, Dyson engineers have doubled the battery life giving the cord-free vacuum up to 40 minutes of run time.
James Dyson: “We've spent more than a decade and over $500m developing our small and powerful digital motors. Our latest generation motor sits at the heart of the Dyson V8 cord-free vacuum. It’s the result of 18 months research and development and 500,000 hours of testing. This motor enables the Dyson V8 cord-free vacuum cleaner to be powerful and versatile, transforming the way people clean their homes.”
The Dyson V8 cord-free vacuum cleaner doesn’t just clean the floor, but quickly transforms between handheld and stick modes to clean down low, up high and everywhere in-between, and it weighs just 5.7 lbs. Building on 10 years of cord-free technology and motor expertise, Dyson V8 cord-free vacuums offer several key evolutions compared to their predecessors including increased runtime, hygienic dirt ejection, more powerful suction and less noise generated..
More power, for longer
Powered by fade-free lithium ion batteries, the new Dyson V8 vacuum has six cells with new chemistry that delivers more power and up to twice the run time of its predecessor, lasting up to 40 minutes.
Always ready for action
Dyson V8 vacuums have no cord. There’s nothing to unravel, plug in, drag around and restrict your reach. Equipped with a docking and charging station, you can grab and clean whenever you need to.
Cleans carpets and hard floors
Powerful suction generated by the Dyson digital motor V8 is paired with Dyson cleaner head technology. The V8 Absolute comes with two Dyson-engineered cleaner heads. A direct-drive cleaner head removes ground-in dirt and pet hair from carpets, while a soft roller cleaner head removes large debris and fine dust from hard floors simultaneously.
Weighs just 5.7lbs.
Inside Dyson cord-free vacuums, key components like the motor and battery are positioned near the hand. This shifts the centre of gravity, making the vacuum lighter and easier to lift.
Hygienic dirt ejector
Dyson V8 cord-free vacuums feature a new bin emptying mechanism. As the bin is emptied, a rubber collar slides down the shroud, scraping dirt and debris off. This enables the user to hygienically remove trapped dust and debris in a single action, without having to touch the dirt. Additionally, the bin is 30% bigger than previous generation machines.
Technology & Development
Dyson digital motor V8
The Dyson digital motor V8 runs at 425W, compared to the previous generation V6 motor’s 350W. The motor spins at up to 110,000rpm, and has upgraded drive electronics and software. Powered by new fade-free Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminium batteries, the Dyson digital motor V8 delivers more power over a longer runtime.
Updating the motor took approximately 18 months of research and development work, with up to 15 engineers working on the project at any given time. Approximately 500,000 hours of testing was carried out on the new motor’s different designs and parts, with up to 120 motors running in Dyson test labs at any given time. The Dyson digital motor V8 builds on more than a decade of motors development, with total investment of over $500million. Dyson has 264 digital motor patents and patents pending.
In 2016, Dyson will produce 8.8million digital motors – that’s approximately one every 3.5 seconds. 376 robots are used to assemble Dyson digital motors, as even the most dextrous human hand isn't precise enough: the smallest manufacturing tolerance is +/- 3 microns, which is approximately a quarter of the thickness of a human hair.
Acoustic engineering
Dyson engineers have developed significant acoustic improvements to Dyson V8 cord-free vacuums: they generate 50 per cent less noise compared to previous generation machines, without any compromise on suction power. The air flow paths through the machine have been reworked, to reduce the noise associated with air moving fast through tight spaces. The post-motor filter has been redesigned, so it helps to muffle sound. And acoustic felt and closed cell foam inside the machine absorbs vibrations, also reducing noise.
Hygienic dirt ejector
To enable the hygienic dirt ejection mechanism, which removes trapped dust and debris in the same action as emptying the bin, Dyson engineers had to redesign the shroud. The shroud in earlier generation machines was constructed from a fine mesh, however engineers found a silicon collar would have left dust behind as it slid down. The Dyson V8 shroud is constructed from chemically etched stainless steel, which has a smooth surface punctuated by approximately 15,000 holes that are 0.4mm in diameter and able to withstand the silicon collar.
Cleaner heads
Dyson engineers don’t stop at the vacuum itself – they are passionate about developing better cleaner heads and tools. The direct-drive cleaner head has a powerful motor located inside the brush bar. This drives stiff nylon bristles deep into carpet pile to remove ground-in dirt and pet hair, while there are also soft anti-static carbon fibre filaments to remove fine dust from hard floors. The cleaner head offers 150 per cent more brush bar power than the previous Dyson V6 Animal motorized head. The direct-drive cleaner head is included with the V8 Absolute and V8 Animal cord-free vacuums.
The soft-roller cleaner head removes large debris and fine dust from hard floors simultaneously. A larger roller covered in soft woven nylon traps large debris, whilst anti-static carbon fibre filaments remove fine dust. A direct-drive motor sits within the roller, allowing full-width, edge to edge cleaning. The soft-roller cleaner head is included with the V8 Absolute cord-free vacuum.
Both cleaner heads are low profile, for reaching under furniture, and feature a swivel neck that pivots to reach into awkward places with a turn of the wrist.
During testing, all Dyson machines undergo hours of gruelling resistance checks. Dyson V8 cord-free machines are pushed for 290 miles to ensure they're robust enough for everyday cleaning challenges.

The Dyson V8 cord-free vacuum range will be available on DysonCanada.ca as of May 17. At major retailers across Canada starting June. The V8 Absolute cord-free vacuum will be $699.99 and the V8 Animal cord-free vacuum will be $599.99. The machine includes a two year warranty on parts and labour.
