Coast LED Pro Pocket Pliers Multi-Tool

The Coast LED Pro Pocket Pliers Multi-Tool (C5899B) is a mid-sized multi-tool. It comes with a fabric case that has a hook and loop front tab and a combined hook and loop/metal snap belt tab, which will fit on belts up to 2" wide.

The H&L front tab is fairly small (1/2" x 3/4") and doesn't stay attached to the case tightly. Often, when my jacket brushed against the tab it would open. I think a metal snap (as on the back of the case) would have been a better choice here. This is unfortunate, as the C5899B lacks a belt clip. If you dispense with the fabric case you'll have to carry the multi-tool in pants or jacket pocket.

At approximately 7/8" thick, 1-3/4" wide and 4" long, and 9 ounces in weight, it's somewhat bulkier and heavier than other models I've tried. The body and all the components are made of 400 series stainless steel, covered with a black backed on enamel. A series of 13 small rubber pads are inlaid on the handle, making for a softer grip.

There are 10 components on the C5899B. I find that the pliers and knife are used much more frequently than the other components. As you'll find on virtually all multi-tools there are two 'arms' that house the various components. When folded outwards they extend the spring-loaded pliers. The plier head incorporates three functions - serrated needle-nose pliers, serrated regular pliers, and  wire cutters. The teeth are nicely milled on both pliers. The wire cutter blades are only 1/4" long, limiting them to fairly small diameter material. I found the arms quite stiff - making the tool a bit awkward to open and close. Perhaps as the tool is used more frequently they'll ease up.

There is a cut out on the knife blade enabling you to open it with the thumb. Once open, the blade locks in place - an important safety feature. To close the blade you depress a small lever at the base of the blade with your thumb and then close the blade with your forefinger.

The 2-3/4" blade is super sharp. The first 1-1/2" is a curved plain edge, and the bottom 1-1/4" is serrated. This is a configuration I quite like. The plain edge is for precise cutting and scoring, while the serrated portion is ideal for cutting or ripping thicker, coarser materials.

On the opposite arm are the other five tools. The flat screwdrivers have 1/8" and 3/16" heads, and the Phillips is a #1. The tools are easy to open, and though they don't lock in place they stay firmly in place while being used.

The scissors, which have 7/8" blades, use a simple wire rod that applies tension to one arm - it works very well.

This is the only multi-knife that I've tried with a built-in LED light. Two in fact - one light on each end of the tool. There is a single button that you press once for the first light to come on, a second time for the other light to come on (the first light automatically turns off), and a third time to turn the light off. The lights are quite bright and have a beam that's about 12" wide (from 3 feet away). Two CR1616 batteries (included with the multi-tool) power the lights. You can expect about 15 hours of run time.

There are two problems I have with the LED lights. I found that occasionally, when opening and closing the knife, I would inadvertently turn the light on. It only happens occasionally, and is more a nuisance than anything else. As well, there is no delayed shut off for the lights. Forget to turn them off and you'll be buying new batteries. Replacements, by the way, are about $5.

The C5899B has a $40 price tag and comes with a lifetime guarantee. While this multi-tool does have some drawbacks - stiff opening arms, no belt clip, no auto LED light shut-off, it does sport a very good knife that can be easily opened and closed with one hand, nicely milled pliers, comfortable padded handle, and dual LED lights.
