INSULATE WHEN YOU RENOVATE

Mississauga, On - For more than 10 years, Kate Campbell, celebrity carpenter and CertainTeed Brand Ambassador, has honed her skills working with some of Canada’s top renovators. She learned the importance of a well-insulated home early in her career.

“Making sure your home is winter-ready is so essential for Canadians,” says Campbell. “You’ll know if your home needs extra insulation if you find it difficult to maintain desired temperatures, if the walls and floors are cold to the touch, and if your heating costs are escalating. Adding insulation when you renovate is a must but there are ways to save money and energy – and increase the comfort of your home without ripping down walls.

“Heat rises, so start in the attic. If you can see the tops of the ceiling joists when you look in your attic, add more insulation. Blown-in loose insulation is a great choice for attics because it fills many hard-to-reach spaces and provides excellent protection from air leakage.”

Campbell uses CertainTeed TrueComfort or InsulSafe XC loose insulation to prevent warm air from rising and escaping through the roof. This heat loss can create ice accumulations along eaves and gutters that can result in damage to the roof.

“You can get a contractor to blow in loose insulation or do it yourself by placing fibre glass batts sideways over existing insulation in order meet or exceed the recommended R-value for your area,” says Campbell. “The higher the thermal resistance or R-value of insulation, the greater its ability to keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Kate Campbell has been working in both the television and renovation industries for more than 10 years. She got into the skilled trades in 2005 after taking a “Women In Skilled Trades” (WIST) course which introduced her to carpentry, electrical, plumbing, finish carpentry and several other trades. She is focused on changing the face of skilled trades and especially passionate about being an advocate for women and supporting causes that are important to her.
