Mastering Hand Tool Techniques

A very readable book covering most of the hand tools that anyone new to the craft will want to know about

Mastering Hand Tool Techniques

Alan and Gill Bridgewater are a writing dynamo team having authored over 45 books and dozens, possibly hundreds, of articles on all sorts of DIY topics - gardening, furniture making, woodcarving, pottery, renewal energy, bricklaying, raising chickens.
Whether or not they actually do any of the things they write about, they do write about them well. Subtitled "A Comprehensive Guide on How to Sharpen, Tune, and Use Classic Hand Tools to Add Power to Your Woodworking" this, their newest book, provides an overview of 180 woodworking hand tools.
Given that that book is only 144 pages long, don't expect a lot of detail on each tool. Rather, the authors provide a primer on what the tools are used for, and how to use them. Which means that people who are new to woodworking will benefit most from the book. It will also be of interest to DIYers who want to know more about hand tools they may have occasion to use during maintenance and renovation work around the house or cottage.
There are copious illustrations throughout the book. I find them well done and very informative. The only issue I have is that they tend to be very small - many are no more than 1-1/2" wide. This makes details hard to decipher. In contrast, the photos, which are plentiful, are much larger, which makes it easer to see that the authors are writing about. While most of the photos are clear, bright and well composed, there are a number that look as though they haven't been colour corrected.
These few issues aside, "Mastering Hand Tool Techniques" is a very readable book that covers most of the hand tools that anyone new to the craft will want to know about.
Highly recommended for novice woodworkers.
