Milwaukee Sliding Utility Knife

There are quite a few different styles of retractable utility knives on the market. They're extremely useful in the shop, on the job, or around the house.

I've used quite a few different utility knives over the past few decades, and have come to prefer the style that uses a segmented blade; as the blade becomes dull you just snap the dull blade segment off to expose a sharp section of blade. I also keep a mini folding utility knife clipped to my tool belt where it's always conveniently at hand.

Slider is on the side of the case rather than on the top
This new Sliding Utility Knife (48-22-1910) from Milwaukee Tools looks very similar to the classic Stanley 99. However, it has a couple of distinctive features. The slider is on the side of the case rather than on top of the knife. I like this design quite a bit (probably because it's similar to the slider on the segmented knife that I use).

Blade change is very quick; simply extend the blade, press a small release button at the top of the case, and pull the blade out. You can set the blade at one of three cutting depths: 1/8", 1/2" and 7/8" (fully exposed). Having these quick-set cutting depths is very convenient. On the top of the case is a small rubber pad; makes cutting material more comfortable when exerting a lot of downward pressure with your thumb.

The padded portion of the handle on the bottom of the case pivots open to store up to 5 blades. A magnet holds the blades securely in place. I found that you can also store a couple of drill driver bits in beside the spare blades (one on each side).

On the front bottom of the case is a wire stripper. It works very efficiently. Simply press the wire into the gap and rotate it 360. Piece of cake.

Integrated wire stripper

Quick, easy stripping
This is a great quality tool at a very reasonable price. It's nice to have a few different kinds of utility knives around, and with this one you won't be disappointed.
