Lee Valley Drilling Jig & Extra-Long Bits

Based on a suggestion from cabinetmaker Stephen Shepherd for a jig that could drill chair spindles, this centering jig has a large bearing surface with sighting marks that make visual alignment easy. It can be used when end-drilling round stock 5/16" to 1-1/2" in diameter.

It also permits drilling of spheres and has a V-notch for drilling into the side of a cylinder or the edge of dimensioned stock. As a side benefit, the conical shape helps catch dust when drilling overhead. The jig stands 2" (50mm) tall, including the height of a bushing.

Made from durable polycarbonate, it comes with hardened steel bushings in Imperial sizes (1/8", 3/16" and 1/4") or metric sizes (3mm, 5mm and 6mm). Bushings are also available separately should you wish to have both.

We offer extra-long HSS drill bits in sets of three, in diameters matched to the bushing sizes listed above. All have 6" shanks to clear the height of the jig and bushing, permitting up to 3-1/2" of drilling depth past the base of the jig. $23.50

Mini Pliers, Snips & Wire Strippers

news_lv_60k2322
Outstanding tools for modelmaking, these pliers, snips and wire strippers also excel at a wide range of other small-scale tasks, from household repairs to electronics work. We tested many tools of this type – some cheaper, some more expensive – and found that these offered the best combination of quality, utility and value. Careful machining of the head, hinge and cutting edges results in jaws that stay aligned, operate smoothly and meet cleanly for precise cuts.

The spring-return handles have a durable PVC coating for comfortable grip. Each measures between 4" and 6-1/4" overall. With tools like these in your workshop, it's surprising how often you'll use them, sparing you the frustration of using a larger tool that's too imprecise for detail work. Made in Japan. Highly recommended.

SharpDraw™ Pencil

news_lv_61N0331
Here's a marking pencil that never needs sharpening. Its blade-like, carbon-fiber reinforced lead is fracture resistant and marks a consistent 1mm thick line at about the darkness of a standard HB pencil. The housing has the familiar cross section of a carpenter's pencil, but with the adjustment mechanism of a utility knife.

One pencil blade is included with the SharpDraw; the replacement blades are also compatible with most 9mm utility knives, making it easy to convert an existing knife into a precision marking pencil. An excellent pencil for drywall and dressed lumber. $8.95

This tool probably needs no explanation – one look at the photo tells you how useful it can be in countless situations. It places a small but strong rare-earth magnet right near your fingertip to help hold onto a nut, bolt or other tiny ferrous object in a tricky spot. Made of polyester with stretch nylon side panels that permit a snug fit on almost anyone’s finger. A true problem solver. $9.95
