SAWS Fine Works in Wood Exhibition

SAWS Fine Works in Wood Exhibition

To be held Sept. 27 – Oct. 6, 2019 Calgary

Calgary, Alta. September , 2019. If you have an interest in woodworking and seeing an exhibition of some of the finest craftsmanship in Alberta, mark your calendars for the Southern Alberta Woodworkers Society (SAWS) “Fine Works in Wood Exhibition and Sale” Sept. 27 to Oct. 6, 2019. It takes place in the Center Court of Southcentre Mall, Calgary, Alta. and is open during regular mall hours. There is no charge for attending.

“This exhibition will have broad interest,” says Neil Dorin, SAWS President. “Many people will enjoy seeing outstanding examples of the workmanship. But it is also an opportunity for woodworking enthusiasts of all skill levels, from accomplished professionals, to artisans, craftspeople, hobbyists, students and others to see entries firsthand and learn more from SAWS about woodworking.”

The entries cover a broad range from functional to the simply artistic, furniture to fine wood turnings and artwork, says Dorin. “One of the nice things about this venue is that it allows people to get up close to the displays so that while visitors are asked to not touch the displays, they can see how they were built and examine the workmanship.”

All exhibits must pass a standards judging panel in order to qualify. A select number of exhibits will be offered for sale during the exhibition.

“Woodworking is growing on the hobby and professional front for people of all ages,” says Dorin. “The exhibition is a celebration of the very best work of our members. The exhibit area will be staffed by SAWS members who can help explain background of the organization to anyone interested.”

SAWS was started just over 35 years ago as a way to bring together all levels of the woodworking community in a social and learning environment.  SAWS membership is open to anyone interested in the craft. There is an annual fee. Regular organization meetings feature speakers, tours of woodworking establishments and firsthand looks at local member shops and projects.

“The greatest benefit of membership for members is the personal connection with a community of woodworkers to share experiences and learn from those active in the craft,” says Dorin.

The Fine Works in Wood exhibition and sale space is provided courtesy of Oxford Properties which owns Southcentre Mall. Financial support is provided in part by assistance from Calgary Arts Development and through Exhibition sponsorship. More information about the upcoming exhibition, entry information, sponsorship opportunities, examples of exhibits from past exhibitions and membership in SAWS is available on the organization’s website www.saws.ca.
