Spray Finishing Made Simple

Jeff Jewitt, the author of this book, isn't a newbie finisher, trying to make a name for himself. He's the Real McCoy when it comes to finishing. This guy is a 'finisher's finisher', with a couple of decades of practical experience with brush, rag and sprayer. He's a well known author (that is, to people who read about finishing), has several books under his belt, a regular gig writing about finishing for Fine Woodworking magazine, and he also operates a web site that specializes in finishing products. Busy man that Jeff.

About six or seven years ago I bought a gravity spray gun to use with my air compressor. The idea was to speed up cabinet production by decreasing the amount of time spent finishing the cabinets. I really didn't know what the heck I was doing, and the instructions that came with the gun and the finish I chose were pretty skimpy. Needless to say, the experience was less than satisfactory, and the spray gun has been long stored away.

However, after reading through Jewitt's book and watching the accompanying DVD, I'm ready to give spraying another try. I've come to the conclusion that spraying isn't difficult, but it is somewhat complicated. There are a lot of things you need to attend to before, during and after spraying.

Jewitt takes the reader through the entire spraying process, from setting up a suitable area for spraying, to selecting the right equipment, knowing how to operate the gun, how to spray, what finishes to use, and how to clean and maintain the equipment. The text is well written, but many of the photos, particularly the action shots, look like they need to be colour corrected.

The book also comes with a 54 minute DVD. The content in the DVD is superb; the content, and the presentation is top notch. However, the camera person must have had too much coffee; there's a lot of jerky movement and the zooming in and out is quite shaky at times.

Still, there's lots of great content in both the book and DVD. If you've recently made the move to spraying, or plan to give it a try, do yourself a favour and get the book first.
