Spring and Fall - two of my favourite times of the year. A lightweight, water resistant, durable jacket with ample pocket storage is what I want. And roomy enough that if it turns a tad cool in the morning or evening I can wear a sweatshirt or hoodie underneath.

This hooded jacked from Carhartt fits the bill nicely. The jacket is made from a combination of cotton (it's breathable so helps control moisture, durable, provides some insulation, and is hypoallergenic), polyester (which is super tough, stain, abrasion and wrinkle-resistant and dries quickly) and ripstop, an elastic synthetic fabric in which reinforced fibres are woven in a crosshatch pattern to minimize the expansion of holes and snags. If interested, read more about ripstop fabric. Put these three together and you get one very durable, highly functional fabric. Many of the seams are double-stitched - some triple-stitched - which adds to the overall durability of the jacket.

The main zipper is a strong, stiff plastic, which some people detest. But I've never had a problem with plasitc zips. There are double metal snap buttons at the sleeve cuffs so you can snug up the fit, which helps prevent cold air whisking up the sleeve. Likewise a drawcord around the hood helps keep the neck warm.

You get six pockets - two lovely large outside pockets, one breast pocket with double snap closures (large enough to hold a smartphone) and one zippered pocket on the right arm (large enough to hold a wallet). Inside are two smaller pockets with Velcro closures. They both measure about 5" wide and just under 6" deep. I use them to store tape measure, pocket knife, keys and the like.

The fit is 'loose', which is what I like. I can
wear a heavy flannel shirt or sweatshirt under this jacket and not feel restricted. The hood is of a good size - it even fits over a safety helmet without causing the back of the jacket to bunch up. The tail of the jacket is long enought that it covers the lower back – great if you do much work that has you stooping or bending down.

I've worn this jacket in temperatures as low as -5°C up to about 12°C in dry weather and in the soup we get out here n the West coast. Outside this range I opt for a heavier or lighter jacket. In the 4 months that I've worn this jacket it's held up extremely well. I find that it cleans up nicely and doesn't wrinkle at all. The zipper runs smoothly, and there aren't any holes in the pockets – and considering all the crap I stuff in them it's a testament to the jacket's durability. While it's not waterproof it is admirably water-repellent. You'd want to stand in the shower for a good half hour before water soaks through this jacket.

Carhartt's Steel Rugged Flex Ripstop Hooded Active Jacket passes my litmus test for quality, value, durability and comfort.
