Ultimate Guide: Decks (4th Edition)

A thorough treatment of deck building

Ultimate Guide: Decks (4th Edition)

There’s a reason that this 4th edition of this book has stayed in print since 1997. It’s excellent. The reader will find ample inspiration in the gorgeous decks pictured throughout the book and detailed, homeowner-friendly instructions to undertake a deck project for themselves.
There are lots of books on the market dealing with decks but the strength of this volume lies in it’s thoroughness. I couldn’t think of a topic that isn’t covered here and better still, often with options for just about every major aspect of deck construction. Footings? How about four options, plus two pre-fab alternatives. Post and railings? How about eight options, all illustrated and well described in the text. Every major phase of deck construction gets the same thorough treatment; lots of photos, illustrations and detailed instructions, plus options and building tips.
An added bonus is the section that presents the deck designs of four premier deck designer-builders (George Drummond of Virginia, Bob Kiefer of New Jersey, Gary Marsh of California and Rick Parish of Texas). Inspiring examples of each designer-builder’s decks are presented in good detail (photos, plans and text). This section alone runs to more than 150 pages. The book ends with three very useful appendices covering tools, materials and building techniques.
This book is for everyone. It is for those of us who can only dream of having luxurious ocean-front, multi-level decks, to those of us who want to get our hands dirty and add a small, simple deck to our homes. Everyone can enjoy and benefit from this book.
